EL PRECIO DE UNA OLVIDADA VIRTUD
El precio de una olvidada virtud.
Queridos Amigos y hermanos en Cristo, me gustaría compartir con ustedes unas palabras sobre la Castidad y San Agustín, en tanto aguardo sus aportes, críticas o asentimientos. A todo ser humano le atrae la idea de ser él mismo, de controlar la situación, de llevar las riendas. Quizá ésta sensación sea mayor si lo que gobierna es lo más preciado, lo más suyo. En la persona lo más valioso es su corazón, su capacidad de amar. La castidad es precisamente esa virtud de gobierno, control, dominio, esa gimnasia del corazón que mantiene en forma la dimensión sexual de la persona y su posibilidad de mayor amor. Los malos ojos con los que se ha mirado con frecuencia esta virtud responden al ser perezoso que llevamos dentro, a la ley del mínimo esfuerzo. No es fácil amar, a pesar de la falsa apariencia que, en películas, series, novelas y foros diversos, se le ha dado a esta cualidad humana, reduciéndola, en la mayoría de los casos, al aspecto genital. Una falsedad repetida y repetida, no se convierte en verdad, pero se manifiesta como algo normal, al menos normalmente aceptado, que, con la insistente repetición, pasa de normal a normativo: «Si no haces el amor con él, es que no le quieres de verdad». Confusión, complejos y pobreza personal se dan al sesgar esta capacidad de la persona. Sólo los que piensan por sí mismos, y no piensan con el pensamiento ajeno, los que viven libres sin el lastre del qué dirán, o peor, qué pienso que pensarán, son capaces de dar el salto a lo auténtico, aunque, como escribí antes, no sea fácil, aunque suponga exigencia, porque vale la pena, como sintetizó el filósofo francés Maurice Blondel: «El amor es lo que de verdad hace que seamos».El escritor y periodista inglés con sentido común, inteligencia y elocuencia, sazonado todo con una abundancia generosa de sentido del humor, Gilbert K. Chesterton explica: «En todas las épocas y pueblos, el control normal y real de la natalidad se llama control de uno mismo». Esto mismo se puede referir a la castidad, control de uno mismo desde la raíz. Pero eso cuesta, y pocos, muy pocos, serán capaces de proclamar y defender esta práctica, porque no es fácil, supone un esfuerzo como todo lo que vale. Sólo aquellos pioneros, aquellos que quieran a las personas por ellas y no por lo que tienen, tendrán el valor de proclamar la castidad, si les dejan. La sexualidad humana no es ni una evasión, ni un objeto de consumo; es cauce maravilloso para expresar un amor verdadero. La castidad no es la represión de la sexualidad, sino la fuerza virtuosa que le da sentido humano. Lo cual, como todo lo que vale, tiene un precio». La Iglesia es una de esos pocos que se atreven a mostrar el beneficio de la castidad. Y precisamente cuando falla en esto alguno de sus miembros, es la sociedad misma, que para sí desprecia esta virtud, la que se apresura a recordárselo, a exigírselo, quizá porque en el fondo no se desprecie la castidad, sino el esfuerzo que se precisa para vivirla. Ejemplos de esto hemos tenido no hace mucho, pero son tan viejos como la vida misma, y de ellos es bueno aprender. Uno de los casos más conocidos dentro de la Historia ha sido el de aquel joven de Hipona al que, con el tiempo y su virtud, se le conoce por San Agustín. En su libro Confesiones declara que había una cosa que lo detenía: el miedo a no ser capaz de ser casto: «Las cosas más frívolas y de menor importancia, que solamente son vanidad de vanidades, esto es, mis amistades antiguas, ésas eran las que me detenían, y como tirándome de la ropa parece que me decían en voz baja: Pues qué, ¿nos dejas y nos abandonas? ¿Desde este mismo instante no hemos de estar contigo jamás? ¿Desde este punto nunca te será permitido esto ni aquello? Pero ¡qué cosas eran las que me sugerían, y yo explico solamente con las palabras, esto ni aquello!»
